What Makes a Good Passive Ventilation System? (And How to Tell the Difference)

Not all ventilation is created equal. With NCC 2022 requirements now in place across Australia, passive ventilation has moved from a nice-to-have to a compliance requirement for many roof types. But meeting the minimum standard on paper and delivering a system that actually performs are two very different things.

So how do you know if a passive ventilation system is genuinely good? Here are the qualities that separate systems that work from those that merely tick a box.

It delivers calculated, continuous, and unimpeded airflow

These three words are the foundation of effective passive ventilation. Calculated means the airflow has been properly specified for the roof type, pitch, and design. Continuous means it isn’t broken up by gaps, blockages, or poor product placement. Unimpeded means nothing is restricting the air from moving freely through the cavity, including insulation, framing, or incorrectly installed products.

A system that achieves all three gives moisture a reliable path out of the building. One that falls short on any of them creates the conditions for condensation, mould, and long-term structural damage.

It works for your specific roof type

There is no one-size-fits-all solution in passive ventilation. A low-pitched metal roof, a cathedral ceiling, a concrete tile roof, and a skillion all have different airflow requirements and need different product combinations to meet them. A good system is one that has been selected and specified for the actual roof at hand, not just whatever is easiest to install.
